Media personality Somizi Mhlongo lifted the spirits of a young man, Atlegang Masilo, in Kimberley by granting his wish of cooking with the larger-than-life star. While Atlegang disclaimed online that he is not a chef, Somizi shared that he has a passion for cooking.

On his Instagram account, Somizi shared on 18 June 2026 that while he saw people tagging him in Atlegang’s post, where he hoped to spend time with the former Idols South Africa judge in the kitchen, he did not respond as he already had a plan.

“Now, what made me want to make his dream come true was more than just his request; it was more about the impact he made on his family. He’s a breadwinner, and he brings happiness and warmth and love and unity in the family.

“The second reason that warmed my heart was that even in the midst of challenges and adversities that he encounters, he’s still able to cook for the less privileged in his community.”

Somizi added, “I was like, ‘I need to plan something special that’s gonna make him feel seen, and for once he can also receive something.’”

The star contacted his team, who contacted Butlers Hotel School, a culinary school in Kimberley. To get Atlegang to the venue, the school pretended to invite him to shoot content.

“Little did he know that I would be there, so this morning I took a flight to Kimberly to make his dream come true.”

Atlegang was certainly stunned, but he didn’t let the surprise stop him from cooking up a delicious meal of egg-fried rice and chicken for himself, Somizi, and the staff.

“I don’t regret spending my day off to put a smile on someone who really deserves it. I would like to thank the culinary school as well for being so kind to give me a few hours to create lifetime memories. The staff and the students were amazing,” said Somizi.
