Veteran South African actor, comedian and television presenter Soli Philander has died at the age of 65.
His cause of his death has not yet been disclosed, although he had been battling cancer for some time.
Familiar face
Born Silamour Philander in 1961 and raised in Elsies River, he was widely known for his work across television, theatre and comedy, becoming a familiar face to audiences over several decades.
Among his most recognisable television roles was hosting the popular Afrikaans music quiz show Liriekeraai, as well as the game show Vat ‘n Kans.
Tributes have begun pouring in following news of his passing, including from Gayton McKenzie, Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture.
Extended condolences
McKenzie extended condolences to Philander’s family and friends, praising the late entertainer’s contribution to South African society and the arts.
“For decades, Soli Philander brought laughter, insight and warmth to audiences everywhere in our country,” the minister said.
“He drew deeply from the communities of the Cape Flats, giving voice to everyday experiences with wit, honesty and compassion. Artists like Soli play an essential role in our democracy. They help us reflect on our society, find common ground, and remind us of our shared humanity.”

McKenzie also highlighted Philander’s ability to use humour and storytelling to capture the realities of South African life, saying his performances resonated with audiences across the country.
Philander’s career spanned multiple roles in the entertainment industry as an actor, presenter, director and comedian, earning him a reputation as one of the country’s most versatile and beloved performers.
The minister said Philander’s legacy would live on through the stories, humour and cultural impact he shared with generations of South Africans.
