Recording artist Jabulani Hadebe, who is more affectionately known to the masses as Sjava, has reached yet another significant milestone in his career after joining the Recording Academy as its latest voting member.
Labelled as one of South Africa’s most influential trailblazers, Sjava’s career is a tale of determination, resilience, and believing in oneself.
Although coming onto the scene as an actor, the Bergville native’s shift into the music industry proved to be exactly what his career needed, as he has transcended into a one-of-a-kind artist.
His sound, although usually categorised by some into the hip-hop genre, can be described as Afro-fusion. It is characterised by raw and spiritual sounds which are heavily influenced by the Zulu culture, and takes different elements from the wide variety of cultures Mzansi has to offer.
His ability to infuse maskandi, mbaqanga, and other Zulu folk styles, coupled with his unique vocal style that is characterised by a textured, earthy, half-spoken, half-sung voice has given more dimension to South African music, and has birthed a new sound that cannot be duplicated anywhere else in the world.
Sjava’s music career can only be described as an answered prayer, as he has achieved uncharted levels of success with each project or single released. From his debut album Umqhele, all the way to his latest offering Inkanyezi, the Uyena hitmaker’s contributions to the industry cannot be stated enough.
After achieving commendable success in music, Sjava is looking to venture into different parts of the art sphere, and has expressed an interest in attending the coveted MET Gala in 2026.

Despite his insistence on writing majority of his music in South African languages, Sjava has achieved immense international success as his music appears to transcend language and culture, resonating with people from across the world.
Not only has he won various notable awards in South Africa, but he has also managed to snatch some notable international awards, including a 2018 BET Viewers’ Choice: Best New International Act award.
Recently, Sjava took to his Instagram to reveal that he had been chosen by his peers as the next person to be inducted as a voting member of The Recording Academy. The acceptance into this exclusive network is not only a significant milestone for Sjava, but will also serve as an opportunity to further promote the diverse sounds and genres South Africa has to offer.
This also means he gets to have a say and help decide Grammy nominations and winners, which is no small, or easy feat.
“A global step. A cultural win. Siyabonga ,” the rapper humbly captioned his post.
