Sizwe Dhlomo praises DJ Maphorisa after Scorpion Kings Live success

Sizwe Dhlomo has set social media alight with his bold take on DJ Maphorisa’s legacy.

Following the success of the Scorpion Kings Live concert on Friday night, the media personality took to Twitter and wrote: “Phori is the greatest of his generation. No debate!”

His statement immediately drew mixed reactions from fans and music lovers.

While some agreed with his sentiment, others argued that the title of “greatest” is still up for debate.

One user responded, “Phori is a giant yes, but ‘greatest of his generation’ is contestable… He’s more of a kingmaker than an uncontested king. The crown might sit heavier on Kabza or even Black Coffee when you factor in artistry, consistency, and global accolades.”

Another wrote, “Nah… unless you put him as a villain, yes, he’s the greatest villain of his time, but not as a good guy.”

There were also concerns raised about how Maphorisa’s production credits are perceived.

“He is great but given him funding other artists to record and getting credit as ‘producer,’ it’s hard for me to tell. Older artists (1980s) benefitted production houses and died poor because of that,” said one user.

Despite the criticism, many fans echoed Dhlomo’s admiration, praising Maphorisa’s impact on the amapiano wave and his role in elevating countless musicians.

“He needs to be appreciated,” another user noted.
