  • Six people have died after their car plunged into the Zonkizizwe River along the R550 in Ekurhuleni on Saturday night.
  • Ekurhuleni emergency services recovered the vehicle and its occupants, but all were tragically declared dead at the scene.
  • The cause of the crash is currently under investigation, with the identities of the victims yet to be released.

Six people have died after the car they were travelling in plunged into the Zonkizizwe River along the R550 in Ekurhuleni on Saturday night.

The City of Ekurhuleni Disaster and Emergency Management Services (DEMS) responded to a distress call at 8.26pm. According to Ekurhuleni EMS spokesman William Tladi, a Mazda had veered off the road and went underwater.

“Emergency responders worked swiftly to recover the six occupants from the wreckage, but unfortunately, all were declared dead at the scene,” Tladi said.

The cause of the crash is currently under investigation, and it is unclear what caused the vehicle to leave the roadway. The identities of the victims have not yet been released as authorities work to notify their families.

The R550 is a busy regional route, and the stretch of road near the Zonkizizwe River has been previously flagged for safety concerns due to past incidents. A full investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash is underway.
