Award-winning actress Sindi Dlathu, best known for her role on The River, has shared touching words following the passing of legendary former beauty queen Cynthia Shange.

Taking to Instagram, Sindi Dlathu expressed her deep admiration and fond memories of the late icon. She wrote, “Grace, love and gentleness…this is how I will always remember you Ma.
You carried such depth and intelligence, sharp wit and a remarkable sense of humour. Our conversations flowed so effortlessly, each one meaningful and enriching.
Those are moments I will forever cherish.
You were always warm and always brought light into every space you entered. Your presence was both grounding and uplifting.
I could write a book about you, but I will leave it here.
You wore your crown with grace Ndlovukazi, in every sense of the word. Lala kahle Ma.”

Her message captured the impact Cynthia had not only as a public figure but also as a person who touched lives on a personal level.

CYNTHIA SHANGE’S PASSING AND LEGACY

Cynthia Shange sadly passed away on 20 April 2026 at the age of 76. According to a statement from her family, she passed away at a hospital in KwaZulu-Natal after facing an illness.

Shange leaves behind a powerful legacy. She made history when she became Miss Natal and later won the Miss Black South Africa title. This achievement marked a significant moment in South African history, as she became the first Black beauty queen to win a Miss South Africa title during a time when opportunities for Black women were limited.

Her success opened doors for many who followed. In 1972, she represented South Africa at the Miss World competition in London, further cementing her place as a trailblazer.

A LIFE THAT INSPIRED MANY

Beyond pageantry, Cynthia Shange also made her mark in the film industry. She played a role in Udeliwe, one of South Africa’s first Black feature films. Her work helped pave the way for future generations in entertainment.

Media personality LaConco has also shared her tribute to the late Cynthia, joining many South Africans who continue to honour her life and legacy.

Cynthia Shange’s influence remains unforgettable, as tributes continue to pour in celebrating a woman who truly wore her crown with grace.
