Simba SC received Sh5 million for their goal in the 1-0 win over Vipers SC in the CAF Champions League on Tuesday evening.
Zambia international playmaker Clatous Chota Chama netted the only goal of the game against the Ugandan champions as they kept their quarter-final hopes alive by moving up to six points, two ahead of Horoya before facing them in Tanzania on 18 March.
The Tanzanian giants end their Group C campaign with Raja Atheltic Club – who have already secured their place in the next round with two games to spare.
However, what has made headlines was the cash payment to the value of R40,000 which was a promise made by President Samia Suluhu Hassan to offer a bonus for each goal scored by Simba or Young Africans SC in CAF inter-club competitions this season.
This incentive was offered after their poor starts to the CAF Champions League and Confederation Cup campaigns respectively with the representative of the state confirming the news last month in a bid to inspire the two Dar es Salaam based giants.
“Our president understands the importance of sports in the country and has given that motivation as our teams play international matches,” Chief government spokesman Gerson Msigwa said to local media last month.
“Now it is the job of Simba and Yanga players to score as many goals as possible in order to put Tanzania in a good position in the competitions.”
Yanga will be hoping to be recipients of the same bonus structure today when they face Real Bamako from Mali – as they are second in Group D, one point ahead of TP Mazembe, two ahead of Bamako and three points behind leaders US Monastir from Tunisia.
