Sifiso Mkhwanazi, convicted of multiple murders and rapes, will spend the rest of his life in prison after being sentenced by the Palm Ridge Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday.

Mkhwanazi, who was convicted on 22 charges, including murder, rape, possession of an unlicensed firearm, and defeating the ends of justice, received several long-term sentences.

These include life imprisonment for murder, 15-year sentences for rape, and six years for defeating the ends of justice.

He was arrested in October 2022 at the age of 22 for the murder of six sex workers in Johannesburg’s central business district.

Scrolla.Africa first reported on the horrific discovery and spoke to several sex workers on the night of the murders.

In March, Judge Cassim Moosa found Mkhwanazi guilty of six murders, six rapes, six counts of defeating the administration of justice, possession of ammunition, and illegal possession of a firearm.

The court postponed sentencing until Mkhwanazi underwent a mental evaluation to determine if he could be classified as a dangerous criminal.

On Wednesday, Mkhwanazi’s case came to a close as he began his life sentence.

During the hearing, victim impact statements revealed that two of the victims were pregnant.

Mkhwanazi began his killing spree at the age of 19 after dropping out of school.

Families of the victims praised investigating officers Captain Vincent Saunders and Sergeant Prince Mbonambi for their dedication and ongoing communication with the families throughout the case.
