  • Shadrack Sibiya has faced criticism for what many describe as condescending and confrontational behaviour towards women at the Madlanga Commission.
  • Activists and social media users say he has been evasive and dismissive during questioning.
  • His testimony continues as the commission hears further evidence.

Suspended deputy national police commissioner Shadrack Sibiya has come under fire for what many have described as confrontational and condescending behaviour towards Commissioner Sisi Baloyi and Advocate Adila Hassim at the Madlanga Commission.

Social media users have criticised Sibiya’s tone, claiming it has been dismissive towards women since his first appearance before the commission.

The Activists and Citizens Forum’s Jack Bloom described Sibiya’s conduct as wrong and unacceptable.

“Adv Hassim is merely doing her work by putting questions and evidence to the witness,” Bloom said.

He added that Sibiya’s accusations that Hassim was acting as Lieutenant-General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi’s lawyer, and that he was being treated as an accused person by the commission, were a smokescreen.

“He is trying to hide from all the damaging evidence that the Commission is putting in front of him,” Bloom said.

Bloom further accused Sibiya of avoiding direct answers.

“Instead of responding to questions put to him, Lt General Sibiya is ducking and diving, either claiming he cannot remember, denying the claims, or saying Sgt Nkosi would be better placed to answer,” he added.

Since his first appearance, Sibiya has denied the evidence presented against him and has accused the commissioners of overwhelming him.

His testimony continued until Tuesday evening, during which several details were placed on record. Proceedings are expected to continue, with a new witness taking the stand on Wednesday.
