Shota cites unemployment as estranged wife, Phumeza, seeks maintenance

The road to finalising the divorce between celebrity couple Mnqobi “Shota” Mdabe and Phumeza Mdabe has hit a snag as Shota is allegedly challenging Phumeza’s maintenance request.

Their divorce came to light in September 2025 via a Sunday World article, which stated that Phumeza filed for divorce because of Shota’s alleged cheating and abusive behaviour towards her.

The estranged couple share a visually impaired son, Mpilo Mdabe, who showcased his DJ’ing skills at DJ Black Coffee’s 50th birthday celebration in March 2026.

SHOTA AND PHUMEZA’S DIVORCE DRAMA CONTINUES

According to Buzz Life News, Phumeza is requesting R65,000 in spousal maintenance and R22,000 for child support.

In response, Shota challenges Phumeza, stating that he is unemployed and depends on his close friends when the going gets tough.

One of those friends is the Grammy-winning Black Coffee, who, as previously reported, came through for the Mdabes by covering the costs of a R3,5 million house and two cars, including supporting one of their children’s aviation studies.

However, Phumeza has opposed Shota’s claims, arguing that he actually receives a substantial income through his illustrious career in the entertainment industry and other business ventures, including his involvement in Black Coffee’s touring business.

In the court documents filed by Phumeza, she mentioned that from May to September 2025, Shota’s businesses made almost R2 million in earnings.

Buzz Life News also reported that a statement allegedly from the court documents states:

“Bank statements of the aforesaid and proof of monthly payments reflect substantial income and past monthly transfers earning in excess of R300 000 per month are herewith attached.”

The couple has not yet addressed the latest drama in their divorce proceedings, which is unfolding at the Johannesburg High Court.
