Tatjana Smith didn’t win gold this time, but she got a silver medal in the 200m breaststroke at the Paris Olympics on Thursday night.

She now has more medals than any other South African athlete.

America’s Kate Douglass won gold with a time of 2:19.24. Smith was close behind at 2:19.60.

Smith now has four Olympic medals – two gold and two silver.

In the same race, South Africa’s Kaylene Corbett finished seventh with a time of 2:24.46. The bronze medal went to the Netherlands’ Tes Schouten.

With Smith’s latest success, Team South Africa has four medals in Paris – a gold and silver from Smith, and bronze medals from the Blitzboks and cyclist Alan Hatherly.

Next, the focus will be on the athletics events, especially South Africa’s relay teams in the 4x100m and 4x400m races.

Chad le Clos, another swimming star, will also compete.

Earlier on Thursday night, 20-year-old backstroker Pieter Coetze finished seventh in the 200m final. He broke the African record with his time of 1:55.47.
