  • A teacher accused of sexual assault was involved in a shooting at a primary school in the Eastern Cape, leaving one educator dead and two injured.
  • The incident occurred after the suspect allegedly forced entry onto the school premises while out on bail.
  • Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the attack, including a possible breach of bail conditions.

A teacher accused of sexual assault at Natabankulu Primary School in the Eastern Cape opened fire on three educators on Thursday afternoon, leaving one teacher dead before he fatally shot himself.

The former teacher allegedly forced entry onto the school premises by cutting through the perimeter fence before opening fire. He was reportedly out on bail in connection with a sexual assault case at the school.

The South African Police Service (SAPS) in the Eastern Cape has launched an investigation into the fatal shooting.

“One educator was declared deceased at the scene. Two other educators sustained injuries and are currently receiving medical treatment. The suspect was also declared deceased at the scene,” said Eastern Cape police spokesperson Nobuntu Gantana.

A full investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident is underway, including whether the suspect breached his bail conditions. The scene has been cordoned off to allow forensic experts to conduct their work.

“The SAPS extends its condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of the deceased educator. Our thoughts are also with the injured victims, and we wish them a speedy recovery. We condemn this violent act in the strongest terms,” said Gantana.
