Severe weather conditions expected across South Africa

SAWS has warned that severe weather conditions are expected to continue across most parts of South Africa this week.
Heavy rains may cause further flooding in Limpopo, Mpumalanga and KwaZulu-Natal, while thunderstorms are forecast for parts of Gauteng.
Extremely high fire danger conditions are also expected in parts of the Northern Cape and the Free State.

The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has warned the public to brace for continued adverse weather conditions across much of the country in the coming week.

Severe weather, including heavy rainfall that may lead to flooding, is expected to persist in Limpopo, Mpumalanga and KwaZulu-Natal.

The warning comes as Limpopo and Mpumalanga continue to battle floodwaters that have disrupted essential services, damaged infrastructure, and claimed the lives of nine people in Limpopo.

SAWS has further cautioned that thunderstorms accompanied by heavy downpours, damaging winds, large amounts of small hail and excessive lightning are expected over the south-western parts of Mpumalanga and Limpopo, as well as the north-eastern areas of Gauteng.

These conditions may result in localised flooding and damage to settlements and infrastructure.

Meanwhile, extremely high fire danger conditions are forecast for parts of the Eastern Northern Cape and the Free State, prompting calls for heightened vigilance.
