Seventeen injured in head-on taxi crash outside Pietermaritzburg

- Seventeen people were injured in a head-on collision between a minibus taxi and a light motor vehicle outside Pietermaritzburg.
- Some of the injured include children who were walking along the roadside at the time of the crash.
- SANTACO KZN has expressed concern and reiterated its commitment to road safety and responsible driving.
Seventeen people have been injured in a head-on collision involving a minibus taxi and a light motor vehicle outside Pietermaritzburg, KwaZulu-Natal, on Tuesday, 6 January 2026.
Following the incident, the South African National Taxi Council (SANTACO) in the province sent its well wishes to those who were injured.
Among the injured were a group of children who were walking along the side of the road.
SANTACO KZN chairperson Boy Zondi said the council is concerned about the circumstances surrounding the tragic crash.
“We can confirm that the minibus taxi involved in the incident belongs to an affiliate of the council and was operating within the jurisdiction of the Mafunze Taxi Association.
“We are deeply saddened by this unfortunate incident and our thoughts are with all the injured passengers, the affected children and their families. We wish everyone who was injured a speedy and full recovery. The safety of commuters and all road users remains a priority for the taxi industry,” said Zondi.
Zondi reiterated the council’s commitment to promoting responsible driving, compliance with road traffic laws, and the protection of both commuters and pedestrians across the province.
