The Lenyenye Regional Court has sentenced Morgan Ngobeni, 31, to two terms of life imprisonment for the multiple rapes he committed in the Mopani district of Limpopo from 2018 to 2020.

Ngobeni got life for two counts, 10 years for another, and five years for sex trafficking.

His crimes began in 2018 when he raped a 17-year-old mentally challenged girl in Letsitele.

Police spokesperson Brigadier Hlulani Mashaba said Ngobeni was arrested in 2019 but

was freed due to lack of evidence.

Detective Sergeant Phumudzo Mabongo’s investigation led to Ngobeni’s arrest and conviction.

Mashaba said Ngobeni targeted victims on Facebook, focusing on two women aged 22 and 26 in Maake. He used fake profiles and threats to control the victims.

“He raped a 26-year-old after meeting at Maake Plaza, threatening her in his rented room,” Mashaba said.

“In 2020, he lured a 22-year-old with a fake job offer on Facebook and raped her in the same

room.”

Major-General Samuel Manala, the acting provincial commissioner of police in Limpopo, lauded the tough sentences, saying it showed how serious crimes committed through social media are.

He also thanked the victims for bravely reporting the crimes.
