Nkosinathi Phakathi, a serial rapist from Ekurhuleni, was sentenced to 791 years in prison and six life terms by the Palm Ridge Magistrate’s Court on Friday.
His sentence includes 42 life terms for rape and 251 10-year terms for kidnapping, four counts of forced rape, making a child witness sex acts, 43 counts of kidnapping, two counts of assault, and four counts of theft.
Phakathi pleaded guilty in November 2022. The courtroom was packed with victims, some shouting at him during breaks, while others cried.
Magistrate Lesego Makolomakwe said Phakathi wasn’t truly remorseful.
“He only pleaded guilty because the state had strong evidence,” she said.
The court emphasised the need to send a strong message against the abuse of women and children.
Phakathi’s crimes occurred between June 2012 and March 2021, targeting victims aged nine to 44 in Etwatwa, near Daveyton.
National Prosecuting Authority spokesperson Lumka Mahanjana called it one of the longest-ever jail sentences. Victims’ families welcomed the sentence but said the pain remains.
“We wish he’d face the victims like he did when he violated them,” one family member said.
