Senzo Meyiwa Died Within Minutes Of Being Shot, Pathologist Tells Court

The absence of a blood trail at the spot where Senzo Meyiwa was killed was investigated by the defence during questioning of a State witness.

On Tuesday, the pathologist who examined the football star’s body testified.

Dr Johannes Steenekamp testified in court about how the gun that killed Meyiwa was put against his chest.

He also said that he died in seconds or minutes.

Five men are on trial for the death of the Bafana Bafana captain in October 2014, while he was visiting his girlfriend, Kelly Khumalo.

While interrogating Steenekamp, the lawyer for the fourth accused, Advocate Zithulele Nxumalo, sought to determine whether a blood trail was left as Meyiwa was brought from the house to the hospital.

However, Steenekamp told the court that while dripping could have occurred, Meyiwa’s external bleeding would have been minimal because he was bleeding largely internally.

Nxumalo informed Steenekamp that he was asking his inquiry in light of the defence’s argument that the scene had been tampered with and Meyiwa’s blood was washed from the floor.

Nxumalo’s inference appeared to be dismissed by Justice Ratha Mokgoatleng.

“You have actually testified that there was no squirting or sprouting of the blood [and] most of the blood was contained within the chest cavity.”

A ballistic expert will take the stand on Wednesday morning.
