  • Suspended Police Minister Senzo Mchunu will continue certain ANC duties while cooperating with investigations into alleged police interference and underworld links.
  • He has handed over his digital devices to the political killings task team following a search-and-seizure operation.
  • The ANC says it will review his case if new information surfaces, reaffirming its step-aside rule for members facing criminal charges.

The African National Congress (ANC) has confirmed that suspended Police Minister Senzo Mchunu will continue with certain party duties while stepping aside from his cabinet responsibilities and cooperating with the Madlanga Commission.

Mchunu was placed on special leave by President Cyril Ramaphosa following allegations of interference in police operations and links to underworld figures in July.

The ANC said Mchunu has agreed to step aside from specific organisational roles while he cooperates with both the Madlanga Commission and the party’s integrity commission.

On Friday, Mchunu handed over his digital devices to the political killings task team as part of an ongoing investigation. His spokesperson, Sthembiso Mshengu, confirmed that a search-and-seizure warrant was executed on Thursday.

In a statement, the ANC national executive committee (NEC) said it would revisit the matter should new developments arise. The NEC reiterated that members facing criminal charges are expected to step aside until their cases are finalised.
