Scouting for Kaizer Chiefs: Wingers to sign – Part 1

While Kaizer Chiefs’ Glody Lilepo, Asanele Velebayi and youngster Mfundo Vilakazi all made valuable contributions last season, Amakhosi lacked sufficient depth and competition on the flanks.

If Amakhosi are looking for a young winger with proven potential and room for further development, then Stellenbosch FC star Langelihle Phili deserves serious consideration.

KAIZER CHIEFS SHOULD SIGN LANGELIHLE PHILI

Phili enjoyed a breakthrough 2025/26 campaign after establishing himself in Stellenbosch FC’s first team under Steve Barker.

The 21-year-old, who previously came through the AmaZulu FC development system, quickly became one of the club’s standout attacking players in the .

His performances earned him Stellenbosch FC’s Golden Boot, Young Player of the Season and Players’ Player of the Season awards, underlining the impact he made during his first full campaign.

The left winger featured in 26 Betway Premiership matches, scoring seven goals and providing one assist in 1,638 minutes. He has also represented South Africa at under-20 level, including appearances at the FIFA Under-20 World Cup.

Recent reports have linked Kaizer Chiefs with an interest in the winger, while clubs in North Africa and Europe are also believed to be monitoring his progress.

DIRECT STYLE COULD SUIT AMAKHOSI

Standing at 1.69 metres, Phili relies on agility, quick feet and intelligent movement rather than physical dominance. Operating primarily as a right-footed left winger, he is comfortable cutting inside onto his stronger foot and attacking defenders in one-on-one situations.

His versatility and direct approach would provide Kaizer Chiefs with another dangerous option alongside Lilepo, Velebayi and Vilakazi, while increasing competition for places across the frontline.

There could also be an opportunity for Kaizer Chiefs to negotiate creatively. Stellenbosch FC have reportedly shown interest in Ashley Du Preez and Tashreeq Morris, potentially opening the door for a player-plus-cash arrangement should Amakhosi decide to pursue Phili seriously.

At just 21 years old, Phili still has significant room for improvement but has already demonstrated an eye for goal and the temperament to perform at Betway Premiership level. If Kaizer Chiefs want to invest in one of South Africa’s brightest emerging wide players, the Stellenbosch FC winger could be an ideal long-term addition.
