Loftus Stadium pulsed with energy on Friday night, August 29, as South Africa’s Amapiano pioneers, DJ Maphorisa and Kabza de Small, returned to the stage with a star-studded line-up for their highly anticipated “Scorpion Kings Live with Friends” concert. Fans didn’t just get a show, they got a night of music, memories, and a celebration of a genre that has reshaped South African music.

A Fiery Start: Makhadzi Sets the Stage Alight

Opening the night with unmatched energy, Makhadzi had the stadium roaring. Known for her trailblazing performances, she captivated the audience with the infectious beats of Lekompo, leaving fans hungry for more before the Amapiano heavyweights took over.

Amapiano Titans and Rising Stars Shine

The concert wasn’t just about nostalgia; it was a showcase of South Africa’s thriving music scene. Young Stunna, Kamo Mphela, Thatohatsi, and Tracy brought the heat with performances that had every corner of the stadium alive. Highlights included DJ Maphorisa’s heartfelt opening, which began with a touching prayer by his mother, a moment that reminded everyone of the personal roots behind the global phenomenon of Amapiano.

Backstage, the excitement was palpable. Mawhoo, singer of Amazwe, reflected on the significance of the night:

“I loved celebrating the different genres tonight and performing in a packed stadium. The vibes, the energy, it’s also so important to celebrate the people you love. I love Kabza and Maphorisa.”

Pretoria DJ Dinho, another performer on the night, shared his pride in witnessing Amapiano’s rise:

“I feel grateful to be part of the movement and to see how the guys have opened doors for so much new talent.”

Even Uncool Mc, known for Hamba Nabo, highlighted the broader impact of the genre:

“Amapiano supports livelihoods, empowers creativity, and introduces audiences to diverse music styles.”

Behind the Scenes: The Art of Staging a Spectacle

Pulling off an event for almost 50,000 attendees is no small feat. Crowd control was challenging, and service hiccups tested even the most patient fans. Yet, the magic of the night was a testament to meticulous planning and creative vision.

Kim Sineke, head of PR for the event, shared how the team managed the enormous production:

“It takes preparation, adaptability, and a skilled team. Every detail—from stage design, lights, and fireworks to wardrobe and makeup, needs to work together seamlessly. Collaboration is everything.”

The event highlighted not just musical talent but the power of teamwork behind the scenes. Every firework, beat, and transition spoke to months of dedication.

Hip Hop, Afrobeats, and an Unforgettable Finale

The night wasn’t just Amapiano. Kwesta, Mlindo the Vocalist, and Cassper Nyovest brought their own energy, blending hip hop and soulful moments, including Nyovest’s moving worship and prayer session.

Afrobeats superstar Davido closed the evening with some of his biggest hits, later joined by Pretoria’s Focalistic for a crowd-pleasing performance of the “Ke Star” remix. The combination of South African talent and international flavor left fans buzzing long after the final note.

“Scorpion Kings Live with Friends” wasn’t just a concert, it was a celebration of culture, creativity, and community. It highlighted how Amapiano has grown from a local sound to a movement that empowers artists and brings people together. For those who attended, it was a night of unforgettable music, heartfelt moments, and proof that South Africa’s musical future is brighter than ever.
