Mpunga Secondary School in Nquqhu, Cofimvaba, Eastern Cape was struggling to educate learners with only two teachers.

Now a third teacher has been hired for Mpunga – and the community has thanked Scrolla.Africa for publishing their story, which they believe led to this change.

In May 2024, concerned parents told Scrolla.Africa about the school having only two teachers. And the two teachers they had only taught maths.

Many kids were left without any classes.

A parent, speaking anonymously, said: “We are happy that after the story was published, a third teacher was added to the school, but we still need more teachers.”

Luyolo Tshemese, a resident, was surprised when the department said the school was too remote to get teachers.

The department said that additional teachers placed at the school in March chose to work at other schools, as allowed by the 2016 agreement.

“I hope that by the end of the year, the school will have more than five teachers. Yes, we are happy, but we know that three teachers are not enough and this is affecting our kids,” said Tshemese.

The school has classes from Grade 1 to Grade 9.

Malibongwe Mtima, spokesperson for the Eastern Cape Education Department, confirmed hiring the third teacher and promised a fourth teacher would be joining this week.
