Savanna serves Bafunny Bafunny wraps sold-Out arena tour

Over 20,000 comedy fans packed arenas across Tshwane, Durban, and Cape Town as the inaugural Savanna Serves Bafunny Bafunny: South Africa’s Festival of Comedy wrapped up its sold-out nationwide tour.

Headlined by Trevor Noah alongside show host Eugene Khoza, the festival turned everyday Mzansi living into collective therapy.

“Savanna has championed South African comedy from small club corners to the Savanna Comics’ Choice Comedy Awards for years,” said Eon Jacobs, Assistant Brand Manager at Savanna Premium Cider.

“Assembling Captain Trevor and the Bafunny Bafunny squad was our way of celebrating the dry, unapologetic humour that unites us all.”

National stars take the arena stage

The tour brought together a stacked roster of local talent, including Learnmore Jonasi, Mbali Gudazi, Thabiso Mhlongo, Rory Petzer, Nonto R, Panch Gasela, and Lindy Johnson.

Highlights included Trevor dissecting how local boom-gate security guards roasted his New York driver’s license, while Eugene targeted men wearing full pyjama uniforms with robes to bed.

Off-stage, roving comedian referees issued ‘yellow cards’ and merchandise to fans for funny concourse infractions, like forgetting a Savanna 0.0 for their designated driver. Behind the scenes, the tour highlighted Savanna’s 30-year legacy in local comedy, emphasising diverse line-ups, female representation, and platforming home-grown talent.

Behind the mic: Insights from the performers

The featured artists also shared key takeaways and direct perspectives from their experience on the road. Reflecting on her personal journey, Lindy Johnson emphasised that the principles her grandfather taught her—staying humble, keeping her head down, and letting the work speak—continue to guide her today.

She noted that when performing globally, she studies local nuances so she can speak directly to the audience while keeping the African storytelling tradition alive.

Learnmore Jonasi explained that stand-up comedy and acting are like playing the violin versus the cello, describing them as distinct art forms that add unique colour to a performer’s craft.

He added that laughter is universal, and that watching Trevor master his pacing and movement on stage served as an incredible lesson.

Meanwhile, Panch Galesa highlighted that connecting with audiences comes down to honesty and vulnerability about everyday life, noting how pioneers like Trevor, Loyiso Gola, and Kagiso Lediga helped transform stand-up from “silly guys doing a thing” into a respected, structured business.
