  • SASSA’s Johannesburg local office has been temporarily closed from Monday, 15 September 2025, due to “operational challenges” following the arrest of eight officials on fraud charges.
  • The agency has redeployed staff to satellite points and outreach locations across Johannesburg to ensure continued service delivery to beneficiaries.
  • SASSA stated the closure is part of its commitment to “zero-tolerance” against malfeasance and to restore public confidence by enhancing fraud prevention.

The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) has announced the temporary closure of its Johannesburg local office, effective from Monday, 15 September 2025.

The move comes as the agency works to address “operational challenges,” which have been linked to the suspension of eight officials facing fraud charges.

The eight officials were arrested and charged at the Lenasia Magistrate Court, prompting SASSA to suspend them pending the conclusion of internal processes. Themba Matlou, CEO of SASSA, stated that the suspensions underscore the agency’s “zero-tolerance approach” to any form of misconduct.

“We want to make sure that everyone is brought to book and they account for their actions,” he said.

Acknowledging the inconvenience the closure will cause, Mr Matlou assured the public that measures are being put in place to ensure beneficiaries continue to receive essential services. SASSA staff and services will be redeployed to several satellite points across the city.

Services will be available at the Westbury Clinic, South Hills Community Hall, and Cosmo City Multipurpose Centre, with staff operating on a staggered schedule. Additionally, services will be provided at outreach points including the Bertha Solomon Recreation Centre, South Rand Community Hall, and Yeoville Recreation Centre on specific dates.

While the physical office is closed, back-office teams will continue to process applications, enquiries, and outstanding matters. The agency’s primary goal is to restore full functionality to the Johannesburg office, clear backlogs, enhance fraud prevention, and rebuild public trust.

SASSA has urged for patience and cooperation from its clients and the broader Johannesburg community during this transitional period. Beneficiaries are reminded that they can visit any other SASSA local office for assistance and that all agency services are free of charge.
