Learners at Ithemba Labantu Primary School in Philippi East, Cape Town, were excited to dance and sing with the famous storyteller, author, actress and poet Dr Gcina Mhlophe.

She visited the school to teach children the importance of respecting their culture.

“Our children need to know about their culture. We need to teach them while they are young, and also about the importance of education. Without culture, the nation is doomed and has no bright future,” said Mhlophe.

“As children, you need to be treated with love, compassion and respect.”

Mhlophe started writing in high school at the age of 17. She was inspired to write for children after visiting a bookshop dedicated to children’s books and has travelled the world since 1985 to tell her stories.

“Children are the future leaders of our country. In the past, our children were using books that were imported and translated into South African languages. It was not the right thing to do, so I encouraged them to be proud of their culture.”

School principal Octavius Colquhoun described Mhlophe’s visit as one of the most memorable events the school has had.

“She is a living example of making a career out of the art of storytelling. Our learners will learn a lot, and her visit will encourage them to learn more about their culture,” he said.

Learners asked Mhlophe to visit them again because they enjoyed listening to her stories.
