South African athlete Sibusiso Kubheka has made history by becoming the first man to run 100 kilometres in under six hours, setting a new world record.
Kubheka completed the distance in 5 hours, 59 minutes, and 20 seconds at the Adidas Chasing 100 challenge in Italy, shattering the previous record by more than six minutes.
The race, held on the Nardò Ring, a high-speed test track, saw Kubheka maintain an average pace of roughly 3 minutes and 35 seconds per kilometre.
The event began at midnight to avoid high temperatures, with three out of five elite athletes finishing the race.
American Charlie Lawrence placed second with a time of 6 hours, 3 minutes, and 47 seconds, and former record-holder Aleksandr Sorokin of Lithuania came in third at 6 hours, 4 minutes, and 10 seconds.
Kubheka’s remarkable performance has set a new benchmark for ultra-marathon running, showcasing an extraordinary feat of physical and mental endurance.
His achievement is a moment of immense pride for South Africa and a source of inspiration for the global running community.
