SARS Obtains Tax Judgment Against Mpho Maboi Over Unpaid Tax
The South African Revenue Service (SARS) has obtained a tax judgment against broadcaster Mpho Maboi over an outstanding personal income tax debt of more than R468,000.
Court papers cited by Briefly News show that Maboi’s original tax liability was just over R336,000. Interest of more than R14,600 and penalties of nearly R135,000 increased the amount owed.
SARS issued a final letter of demand on 19 June 2026, putting the outstanding balance at R468,136.42.
The revenue service gave Maboi 10 business days to settle the debt or make use of available options, including arranging an instalment agreement, requesting the suspension of payment while disputing the assessment, or applying for a compromise.
SARS also warned that it could take further recovery steps if the matter was not resolved.
Under sections 172 to 174 of the Tax Administration Act, SARS can, after giving the required notice, file a certified statement of an outstanding tax debt with a competent court. The statement is then treated as a civil judgment in favour of SARS for the amount specified.
The Constitutional Court has confirmed that a tax judgment issued through this process can be subject to a later rescission application in appropriate circumstances.
Maboi has acknowledged the judgment and said her legal and financial representatives are dealing with the matter.
“Yes, I’m aware. My lawyer, accountant and SARS are dealing with it… A reversal of the judgment is pending. I’m not ducking my responsibilities as a law-abiding citizen,” she said, according to Briefly News.
The judgment does not, on its own, establish that Maboi deliberately avoided paying tax. It concerns an outstanding assessed tax debt and SARS’s efforts to recover it.
Maboi is a broadcaster and sports presenter who has worked in radio and television, including at Metro FM, YFM, Kaya FM and SuperSport. Kaya FM confirmed in 2026 that she would continue as part of its breakfast-show team alongside DJ Fresh and Thato Mataboge.
