SAPS Fake Notice On Landlord Fines Debunked

Posted on June 30, 2026

The South African Police Service has dismissed a viral notice claiming landlords could face R10,000 fines for renting property to undocumented migrants.

According to IOL, SAPS said the document, titled “For landlords keeping undocumented immigrants in South Africa”, did not come from the police and should not be treated as official communication.

Police Reject Viral Landlord Warning

The SAPS fake notice claimed landlords could face criminal charges, R10,000 penalties per undocumented tenant, and possible property inspections.

Police rejected the document and said it had never been issued or endorsed by SAPS. The service urged South Africans to check information before sharing it online, especially during a period of heightened tension around immigration.

SAPS also encouraged the public to rely on verified police communication platforms for official updates. The official SAPS newsroom provides access to media statements, speeches, latest news and social media links.

Misinformation Spreads During June 30 Protests

The SAPS fake notice circulated as citizens marched in parts of South Africa on 30 June 2026 over illegal immigration and border security concerns, according to IOL.

Government had earlier said 30 June would remain a normal working day. The Inter-Ministerial Committee on Migration warned that violence, intimidation, vigilantism, xenophobia, hate speech and fake news would be prosecuted.

Justice and Constitutional Development Minister Mmamaloko Kubayi said no unauthorised individuals may demand documentation or proof of nationality from members of the public. She also said blocking access to schools, hospitals, clinics or other public services is unlawful.

Officials Urge Calm And Verification

President Cyril Ramaphosa previously said the 30 June protests were unnecessary because government was already addressing immigration concerns. He also warned against attempts to mislead South Africans or create instability.

The latest SAPS fake notice follows other false immigration-related claims. AFP Fact Check reported earlier in June that government had not issued a 30 June ultimatum ordering undocumented foreigners to leave South Africa.

Police said the public should verify information before posting or forwarding it.

“We encourage the public to verify information through official channels before sharing it,” SAPS said, according to IOL. “Let us all play our part in promoting accurate information, responsible engagement, and respect for the rule of law.”
