Gauteng police have arrested one suspect following an attempted armed robbery of a guest near a hotel in Sandton on Thursday, 9 April 2026.
The arrest comes after police received information about a white Toyota Corolla that was allegedly involved in an armed robbery and began tracing the suspects.
While driving along Katherine Street, officers spotted the vehicle carrying three occupants. When police attempted to stop it, the driver sped off, leading to a high-speed chase.
During the pursuit, two suspects jumped out of the moving vehicle and fled on foot. Officers continued following the vehicle until it collided with a truck and came to a halt.
The driver then got out and attempted to flee, but police gave chase and caught him a few metres from the scene.
Upon searching the vehicle, officers recovered two unlicensed firearms, ammunition, and gloves.
Police also established that the vehicle had been cloned and was originally hijacked in Daveyton in February 2026.
The arrested suspect is expected to appear in court soon on charges including possession of a hijacked vehicle, possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition, as well as reckless and negligent driving.
Police spokesperson Athlenda Mathe confirmed that efforts are underway to locate the two suspects who escaped.
