The South African National Defence Force (SANDF) has dismissed claims suggesting that its members raised concerns with the government over the influx of foreign nationals into South Africa.
According to IOL, the military has strongly rejected allegations circulating on social media that link the Defence Force to immigration matters.
SANDF spokesperson Siphiwe Dlamini said the claims were misleading and could damage public confidence in the military.
SANDF rejects allegations about foreign nationals
The Defence Force has denied that its members submitted warnings, recommendations or representations to the government or any other authority regarding foreign nationals entering South Africa.
Dlamini said the allegations were unfounded and appeared to question the integrity of the military without justification.
The SANDF also expressed concern about social media discussions that associate the institution with immigration disputes.
According to the military, these claims create a misleading impression of its involvement in matters that fall outside its responsibilities.
Military says immigration policy is government’s responsibility
The SANDF has clarified that it does not challenge, oppose or attempt to influence government decisions concerning immigration.
Dlamini explained that the Defence Force operates under the Constitution, relevant legislation and lawful instructions issued by the South African government.
He emphasised that decisions about immigration policy and how those policies are implemented remain the responsibility of the relevant government authorities.
The military also maintained that its members are expected to carry out their constitutional duties professionally while remaining politically neutral.
SANDF warns against misleading social media claims
The Defence Force has urged South Africans to be cautious about information shared on social media, particularly claims involving the military and immigration.
Dlamini warned that involving the SANDF in public debates for which it has no responsibility could undermine confidence in national institutions.
He said the military remains committed to maintaining discipline, professionalism and political neutrality while fulfilling its constitutional mandate.
The SANDF has called on social media users and members of the public to avoid spreading information it considers false or misleading.
The statement reinforces the military’s position that it has not made representations to the government concerning the influx of foreign nationals and does not seek to influence South Africa’s immigration policies.
