The South African Football Association (SAFA) has dismissed media reports claiming that Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos has already been offered a one-year contract extension, describing the claims as false, unfounded and misleading.
In a statement issued on Thursday, the association said it had noted with concern reports published by several respected media houses alleging that the Belgian mentor had either been offered or had already received a new deal.
SAFA moved swiftly to set the record straight, confirming that no contract has been issued to any coach regarding the Bafana Bafana head coach position.
The association said Broos, who has been in his home country of Belgium since Bafana Bafana’s exit from the 2026 FIFA World Cup, remains under contract until the end of July 2026 in line with his existing agreement.
Broos has already made it clear that he intends to step down as Bafana Bafana coach following the World Cup. SAFA President Danny Jordaan has, however, asked him to consider remaining involved with the national team in an advisory or scouting role, and the association is still awaiting his response.
According to SAFA, its internal governance processes regarding the future of the Bafana Bafana technical team have not yet been finalised. As a result, no decision has been taken and no contract extension has been approved by the National Executive Committee (NEC).
“It is therefore regrettable that reports have been published alleging that Coach Broos has already received a contract extension, with some publications further attributing these claims to unnamed sources,” the association said.
SAFA warned that such reports create unnecessary speculation, misinform the football public and undermine the association’s established decision-making processes.
The football governing body also appealed to media organisations to uphold responsible journalism by seeking comment from SAFA before publishing reports relating to the affairs of the association.
“A simple request for comment would enable SAFA to verify facts and assist in preventing the publication and circulation of unfounded or unsupported reports,” the statement read.
SAFA reiterated its commitment to transparent communication and assured football supporters that an official announcement regarding the future of the Bafana Bafana coaching position would only be made once all internal processes had been completed and the relevant decisions approved by the association’s structures.
The association thanked its stakeholders and the public for their continued support and urged football fans to rely on official SAFA communication channels for accurate and verified information regarding the national teams.
