SAFA Baffled By PSL Boycott On Its Indaba And Congress

SAFA CEO Tebogo Motlanthe was taken the back by the PSL executive‘s statement on Thursday, which said they will not be attending the SAFA Indaba that started on Friday until Saturday which will be followed by the Ordinary Congress on Sunday, saying “he doesn’t understand why they are not attending”.

The PSL, who didn’t say why they would not attend, the iDiski Times was informed that the PSL were not in favour of what was going to put forward by SAFA as proposals to the league, mainly the coaching qualification of CAF A Licence to coach in the DStv Premiership and also CAF B licence coaching in the Motsepe Foundation Championship.

This was also mentioned by SAFA Technical Director Walter Steenbok, who according to the iDiski Times, has ruffled a few feathers to the PSL with his statement this week.

Baffling, while that was going to be put forward, SAFA has not had CAF A and B coaching courses in the country since 2018, though CAF has localized to member associations to come with their design and then seek guidance from the African football mother body.

The PSL, according to the sources, was also left annoyed by SAFA CEO Motlanthe’s proposal of reducing the age group of the DStv Diski Challenge to be the U19, not U23 as it is now.

That competition, according to sources, is very close to the PSL executives, with iDiski Times informed that R50 million is pumped by MultiChoice to run the competition annually, infuriating the PSL, the special member of the SAFA.

“The response is a clear one,” said Motlanthe.

“When you get a letter without saying to you this is my reason, being from a legal practitioner, you need to get the reasons first before you respond.

“So what we have resolved, because that statement was sent to me, it was just a press release, is to seek more information to say what the issues are.

“Of course after hearing their side, we will then say if we can meet and resolve if they’re issues which need to be resolved.

“The agenda (for the indaba) was issued a month ago and given to all members. There were no issues with the agenda, so what we’re going to do is to write to them.

“Unfortunately, we’re caught up with these three major events but when I get a break I will write to the acting CEO of the league (PSL Mato Madlala) to ask for more particulars if it was a court case.

“But because it’s not a court case, we’ll need to know the reasons, what the issues are. Now it’s difficult to comment because you don’t know what are the issues with the agenda which was there for a month.

“The issue (of the PSL pulling out) just came at the eleventh hour. So I will write seeking a response from them as a member of Safa.”

The PSL, in seeking to resolve the matter, said they will seek an urgent audience with Minister of Sports, Arts and Culture Zizi Kodwa, the Confederation of African Football (Caf) president Patrice Motsepe and stakeholders that support professional football.
