SABC Technician Internship 2022

Under the 12 months graduate programme, participants will assist the TV Media and OB Technology department in ensuring the smooth running of successful business initiatives and TV productions in order to meet SABC’s objectives. The position is suitable for those who have completed a three-year diploma in electrical engineering (Light current) and are seeking to gain experience and further their career.

The candidate should be willing to work on weekends, on public holidays, and at unsociable hours, have reliable transportation so he or she can travel to and from work during unsociable hours, and be flexible to work overtime and travel for an extended period of time.

As part of the application, the applicant will be assessed for his or her fitness for work.

About the Team

The SABC’s Television and Outside Broadcast business unit is part of the Technology Division. This unit provides broadcasting services to both internal and external clients. Their TV and Outside Broadcast Team delivers custom broadcast solutions to the clients as well as provides broadcast support and facilities.

Roles and Responsibilities:

The implementation, maintenance, and administration of broadcasting systems/ facilities and equipment effectively and efficiently to ensure optimum operation, function, security, and availability of SABC Technology facilities and equipment.

Project Implementation

  • Assisting Capex Project managers on implementation, installation, and configuration to ensure that functional requirements are met and services are not interrupted

Systems Support and Maintenance

  • Participate in the development of design specifications
  • Maintaining and upgrading systems hardware and software
  • To reduce technical faults on-air, correct configuration and testing of broadcast equipment is required
  • Maintain equipment/facilities in a preventative and corrective manner
  • Ensure maximum on-air time by troubleshooting and following emergency procedures
  • Broadcasting signals are transmitted successfully
  • Implementation of equipment functionality based on user requirements
  • Operate specialized broadcast equipment by rigging, setting it up, and operating it
  • Administration of technical/operational matters, e.g. fault reports,
  • As soon as possible and in accordance with SABC procedures, respond to fault reports
  • Viewing and adjusting picture settings in real-time according to broadcast standards and artistic interpretation according to live picture monitoring
  • To optimize service quality and reduce downtime, providing users with technical support and advice
  • Setting up and testing digital equipment correctly to ensure less than a certain percentage of technical faults on the air
  • Maintain virus-free, functioning, streamlined, and reliable digital systems
  • Maintain compatibility and integration among all digital systems
  • Logs and system checks are used to assess the system’s functionality on a regular basis
  • To support the procurement of appropriate equipment and software, provide technical input and specifications
  • Monitoring and controlling scheduled and preventative maintenance compliance
  • In accordance with Broadcast Continuity, all system data should be backed up
  • All technical documentation is continually reviewed and updated
  • A summary of faults, tasks, risks, and red flags escalations, as well as a status report on deliverable progress
  • Undertake all tasks necessary to maintain, operate, and adhere to the technical, operational, and safety specifications of the Media Technology infrastructure and Radio Facilities, exploiting all available resources for successful production, recording, and broadcast

Governance and Operational Compliance

  • It is important to report and escalate risk findings
  • Obey OHS regulations as well as SABC company policies and procedures
  • Follow company policies and procedures to maintain discipline
  • Software license compliance with OEMs
  • Application of SOPs in order to ensure business continuity and sustainability
  • Work with the Disaster Recovery Plan to ensure it is effective

Asset Management 

  • Verify assets annually (manually or electronically)
  •  Tracking and managing assets

Maintained Customer Relations

  • Providing technical assistance to customers in a friendly and helpful manner
  • Ensure services are rendered in accordance with customer requests
  • Assist and guide customers/users with basic technical issues
  • Resolved complaints and requests of customers
  • Engagement of internal clients in technical compliance
  • Understanding current and future needs by participating in OEM engagements

Managed Individual

  • Follow the policies and procedures for performance management
  • Annual performance agreements with managers
  • Review with manager and documentation according to deadlines (quarterly)

Who should apply?

To qualify for SABC’s internship programme, applicants must meet minimum eligibility requirements. Eligibility criteria are as follows:

  • A three-year diploma (S4/T3) in the field of Electrical Engineering (Communications, Light Current, Information Technology or Computer Studies)  (NQF6)

Knowledge and skills required:

  • A thorough understanding of radio communications and IP broadcasts.
  • Working knowledge of circuit diagrams, flow charts, and file formats
  • Audio & video file formats knowledge & understanding
  • The ability to apply good broadcasting principles and knowledge of broadcast standards.
  • Broadcasting production environment knowledge and understanding
  • Knowing the TV operations process, workflow, and systems
  • Analog and digital test instruments are interpreted and used
  • Preparation of equipment and monitoring of quality during production
  • Different kinds of production knowledge and skills.
  • Equipment acquisition, setup, testing, and operation.
  • Technical broadcast equipment control and operation.
  • Administration of technical and operational aspects, e.g. fault reports
  • Installing and repairing components that have failed; Component level repairs
  • Ability to handle emergencies and troubleshoot
  • Maintaining and upgrading hardware and software
  • Maintaining equipment and facilities in a preventative and corrective manner
  • Understanding of TV standards, such as analogue and digital, file formats and online streaming formats, as well as acquisition formats.
  • Experience in repairing, configuring/setting up, testing and operating broadcast equipment.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint.
  • Local Area Networks (LAN) and Windows Domains knowledge and experience
  • Ability to perform, implement, maintain, modify, and install hardware and software systems.
  • The installation and repair of mechanical components (e.g. replacing components or hardware).
  • Provide technical support by translating technical terms and workflows,
  • Experience using contribution and distribution systems for audio & video
  • An understanding of and an ability to apply broadcast and production television concepts including analog and digital, radio and television systems, metadata, audio and video (DTT, OTT, and VOD)
  • The ability to understand and apply office administration tasks and communications
