SABC (Internship Camera Operations) 2022

SABC has five openings for Camera Operator internships to join and assist their TV and Outside Broadcast team. This 12-month graduate programme aims to provide support and assistance to SABC’s TV Media and OB Technology department for ensuring effective implementation of their business initiatives or TV productions to deliver SABC’s objectives. 

This internship is inviting applications from candidates who have successfully completed their degree/diploma/certificate in the field of TV and Film production/Video technology or Studio production/Camera Ops and looking for an opportunity to further improve their skills with experience in the broadcasting environment. 

About the Team

TV and Outside Broadcast is a unit of SABC’s Technology Division.  The unit offers broadcasting services to SABC internally as well as to its external clients. The team of TV and Outside Broadcast is accountable for providing facilities and support for broadcasting and offering custom broadcast services to their clients.

Location: Auckland Park

Key Responsibilities and duties include:

Assist and support in smooth and effective planning, setting up, obtaining, testing and operating the camera equipment throughout the process of TV productions to ensure uninterrupted and effective national broadcasting.

  • Provide support and assistance to determine and meet customer needs.
  • Set up and operate camera equipment according to Standard Operating Procedures.
  • Production material delivered on time, within scope, and according to specification.
  • Assist in ensuring that camera equipment is in good working order before production.
  • Support and assist with camera equipment maintenance or notify OB technician/superior of faulty equipment immediately.
  • Enhance production quality by utilizing ancillary equipment and camera techniques.
  • Help troubleshoot problems and respond to emergencies efficiently and effectively.
  • Preparing for production sessions by familiarizing yourself with the requirements.
  • Before beginning production sessions, familiarize yourself with the production facility (OB Unit or TV Studio).
  • Compliance with SOP’s
  • Compliance with the company’s policies.

Qualification Requirements: 

  • Relevant diploma or degree or Certificate in Film and Television Video /Production/Technology or experience in camera operations or studio production of at least one year.

Knowledge and Skills Requirements:

  • Understands the equipment & facilities used in broadcasting production environments.
  • Understands the systems, workflows, and processes of TV operations.
  • Demonstrates the ability to implement operational support based on advice.
  • Knowledgeable and proficient in basic camera equipment maintenance.
  • Knowing fundamental Troubleshooting procedures and demonstrating a thorough understanding of them.
  • Knowing how to use a camera to follow moving objects, how to operate a camera, how to frame shots, and maintain composition within scenes or shots.
  • Displays knowledge and understanding of applications of different cameras.
  • Acquires knowledge and understanding of appropriate parts and accessories of camera equipment like tripods, lenses, and cranes.
  • Knows and understands how to handle fragile OB/studio equipment in a safe manner.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of how to use light effectively in order to increase the quality of production
  • The ability to understand and apply broadcast standards.
