SAAFoST (South African Association for Food Science and Technology) Foundation serves the food sector and allied industry of South Africa through its association of professionals in food science, technology, and other relevant fields. SAAFoST aims to increase food science and technological knowledge by promoting scientific and academic research, workshops, meetings, membership magazines, exhibitions, seminars, and providing educational support. As a non-profit organization, the company is mainly run by volunteers and has an estimated 2000 employees spread out in Southern Africa.

SAAFost Foundation has been established by SAAFost and the foundation is responsible for administering and managing SAAFost awards, academic bursaries and other prizes.

SAAFoST Aubrey Parsons Study Grant 2022

For the academic year 2022, the SAAFoST Foundation is accepting applications for the Aubrey Parsons Study Grant. Studies in Food Technology and Food Science will be eligible for this study grant for B-Tech or BSc Hons degrees. The bursary will be awarded across these departments and at the mentioned below universities:

Departments of Food Technology at the following institutions: 

  • Durban University of Technology
  • Cape Peninsula University of Technology
  • University of Johannesburg
  • Tshwane University of Technology 

Departments of Food Science at the following institutions: 

  • University of Pretoria
  • University of Stellenbosch
  • University of the Free State
  • University of Venda 

Coverage

A bursary of R20 000 is awarded for each student – it is the total amount awarded regardless of study duration. Applicants will be selected on the basis of their academic performance.

It is the SAAFoST Foundation that is responsible for adjudicating the nominations and for making the final decision as to who will be selected. The Institution will receive a payment to cover the cost of the course.

Who should apply?

Before applying, it is required that you meet the following minimal requirements. It is important to note that if your application does not meet all the requirements then it will not be considered.

  • Applicants must have been members of SAAFoST for at least a year before they apply for the scholarship
  • The applicant must be a full-time student in one of the departments above, at one of the institutions mentioned above
  • Studying at a university requires a BSc (Hons) qualification while studying at a university of technology requires a BTech qualification
  • Your academic record must be strong
  • A minimum average of at least 70% must have been maintained throughout previous academic years

How do I apply?

Recognized tertiary institutions must apply for this scholarship on behalf of their students (students themselves cannot apply for it). Candidates for the award must be nominated or recommended by the department heads based on their academic performance and financial needs. Only one candidate may be nominated by each tertiary institution and the awards cannot be transferred or shared.

It is required that cleared copies of the following supporting documents are attached to your application. Submissions of these documents is a mandatory part of the application process – if any of these is missing, your application will not be considered:

  • Membership proof for SAAFoST
  • Registration proof for full-time studies at any of the accredited institutions
  • Record of all previous academic achievements of the nominees

When sending an email, in the subject line, type the words “SAAFoST Aubrey Parsons Study Grant Application”.

Application Deadline?

The last date of submission of the application is 18 April 2022. Applicants submitting their applications after the closing date will not be considered. Therefore, it is vital that you submit your application before the closing date.
