A Russian man could be jailed for up to 30 years after being arrested in France for allegedly planning to disrupt the Paris Olympics.
With the event starting soon, French authorities have checked over a million people and nearly 5,000 have been denied entry.
The 40-year-old Russian man was charged this week for preparing a large-scale operation to destabilise France during the Olympics.
Although it was not a terror attack, the plan could have had serious consequences.
The man is currently in pre-trial detention, and the investigation is being handled by specialists.
French Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin said that over 800 of the 4,360 people banned from the event were suspected of being agents of foreign interference.
“We are here to ensure that sport is not used for espionage, cyberattacks, or to spread false information about France and the French,” Darmanin said.
The Olympics start on Friday.
