Rulani On Al Ahly-Medal Debate

Mamelodi Sundowns co-coach Rulani Mokwena has given his views on the debate around several Al Ahly players taking their runners-up medal off right after receiving them on Monday.

The Club of the Century lost 2-0 to Wydad Athletic Club at the Stade Mohamed V in Casablanca, Morocco.

After the final several Al Ahly players were seen taking their runners-up medals off their necks straight after receiving them, with Steve Komphela calling their behaviour “disgusting”.

His coaching colleague, Mokwena also addressed the issue as part of SuperSport TV’s panel and tried to explain why the players were so disappointed.

“There could be many reasons. One [reason] could be that they are bad loser,” he said.

“Show me a good loser and I’ll show you a loser! And that’s the reality of the situation.

“How many finals have these Al Ahly players played? For them just to be in a final is not an end-goal, it’s not the greatest experience of their careers, it’s just another final.

“But another final they have to win and they wanted to win, because for them it’s also about always participating in the Club World Cup and you could also sense maybe that’s part of the disappointment, that they’re not part of the Club World Cup in the following year.”

Mokwena’s comments came before a video of Al Ahly star Amr El Solia surfaced, where he is seen throwing his medal away before entering the tunnel to the dressing rooms.
