Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Rulani Mokwena has commented on the form of attacker Cassius Mailula, who is currently experiencing a goal drought.

Mailula has been one of the standout performers in the 2022/23 DStv Premiership. The youngster played a vital role in helping Sundowns clinch their sixth league title in a row.

The Tshwane giants were crowned league champions without kicking the ball last week when SuperSport United, who had mathematical chance of fighting for the title, dropped points.

Mokwena’s troops have seemingly moved their foot off the pedal after winning the league as they have drawn their last three encounters; failing to score in two of those games.

Meanwhile, Mailula has struggled to find the back of the net in recent games with his last goal dating back to the 14th of March when Sundowns thrashed Royal AM 5-1.

The 21-year old has scored 14 goals and provided four assists after 25 games played in all competitions.

Mailula made his debut for Bafana Bafana last month and he established himself as one of the top contenders for Young Player of the Season award.

However, he is struggling to kiss the back of the net of late and his coach Mokwena said is confident that Mailula will soon find his goal scoring touch again.

“I was talking to him[Cassius Mailula] and showing him the clips of his previous performance and he said to me; ‘coach I need to walk barefooted’, that’s what he said,” said Mokwena.

“So unfortunately with the young ones, you have to accept that you are paying school fees and they can only learn by making mistakes.”

Mokwena labelled playing alongside experienced players like Themba Zwane and Dennis Onyango for Sundowns’ youngsters as a privilege.

“It is a privilege to train with Themba Zwane and Marcelo Allende as well as doing extra training against Dennis Onyango and Ronwen Williams,” added the Sundowns mentor.

“As a 17-year old, 16-year-old teenager, I would do anything for that.”

Sundowns will be looking to end their three game winless streak when they face Stellenbosch FC in the Nedbank Cup quarter-finals at Athlone Stadium on Saturday, 15th of April.
