Rulani Hails Sundowns’ Players Attitude

Mamelodi Sundowns co head coach Rulani Mokwena has paid credit to his players attitude after their 4-2 win over Al Hilal in the CAF Champions League on Saturday.

Sundowns achieved the victory, despite being reduced to ten men for most of the game after Brian Onyango’s red card.

Sundowns had already booked their place in the knockout stages prior to the game, and Mokwena says that could have seen his team demotivated, but instead they showed great attitude.

“Congratulations to Mamelodi Sundowns for officially qualifying,” Mokwena said at the post match press conference.

“I think of course we came into this match with the 10 points and yesterday’s result allowed us to mathematically be already in the knockouts.

“And it’s not an easy game to play particularly when you know that you’ve already qualified.

“Even more difficult particularly when you have to deal with the heat, the pitch, and then to play against the very good Al Hilal, side that are trying to qualify.

“What made it even more difficult was having to play most of the match with one man down. But instead of complaining whinging, whining, we got on with the business,

“We showed respect for our badge and for the nation, and played the game the way it was supposed to be played

“So huge congratulations to our players for a gallant fight, for showing resilience and diligence to make sure that we win the game.

“What helped us win was the players attitude. We just have a very, very good group of players and a very, very, very good group of players with great attitude .

“We had to deal with Ouattara’s  diagonal balls, Mustapha’s speed, Abdelrahman is always a threat in and around the box , Ajagun in between the lines is creative and creates a lot of possibilities for them to score, but we were prepared and the players showed great spirit and great tactical discipline. So all the credit goes to our players.”

“I think huge compliments to the club Al Hilal for the investment,” Mokwena added.

“It is clear and very visible to see that a lot of work has been done on this stadium. The pitch in terms of quality has improved drastically, it looks like they’ve got a bit of kikuyu now going on to the pitch, which makes it a little bit better for a football match.

“But if there is something that on the African continent we can definitely improve, it’s facilities and it’s great to see that Allah have taken that step forward.”
