New Mamelodi Sundowns Head Coach Rulani Mokwena has addressed the recent changes to the club’s technical team and expressed his gratitude towards the leadership at Chloorkop.
Mokwena was overseeing his first game as sole Head Coach after Manqoba Mngqithi was demoted to Senior Coach earlier in the week, while Steve Komphela now holds the role as First Team Coach.
While the changes seemingly had a great impact on the squad, who thumped Maritzburg United 5-0 following braces from Cassius Mailula, Haashim Domingo and a solitary goal by Thapelo Morena, Mokwena insisted not much has changed from his point of view.
“I feel an enormous sense of gratitude and appreciation for being bestowed with a huge responsibility,” he said after the game against Maritzburg.
“But also, it’s a collective effort, nothing changes because I’m just as important as everybody else in this club, if not less important. There is far more important people at Mamelodi Sundowns than myself, I’m just a small piece of the puzzle that tries to give it’s best for the organisation.

“And I will continue to do that. We still have coach Manqoba, who is an esteemed and top coach. Coach Steve, who is an esteemed and top coach. His pedigree speaks for itself. Coach Wendell and the rest of our technical team.
“Nothing changes, nothing changes, my importance does not get elevated at all. Instead I think like Nelson Mandela said ‘some of the best leaders are the ones leading from the back’ and you don’t even hear much about them, except maybe in moments of crisis when they stand up and protect everybody else.
“To tell you the truth, apart from just gratitude toward the president, the chairman, the Mamelodi Sundowns family, of course, I cannot not say that because it’s a genuine sense of appreciation for the trust and belief, but for sure for me it’s business as usual because what is important is the club and the club comes first.
“It’s a decision the club made and at the that’s what more important. No individual is bigger than the club and that includes myself.
