Rulani Addresses Saavedra Scare Ahead Of Al Ahly Clash

Mamelodi Sundowns co-head coach Rulani Mokwena has revealed that new signing Erwin Saavedra might not be available for their CAF Champions League clash with Al Ahly.

Saavedra made his starting XI debut in Masandawana’s goalless draw with Al-Merrikh but only lasted 38 minutes before he had to be replaced by Thabiso Kutumela.

Mokwena said the club’s new winger had undergone scans on Tuesday but didn’t want to rule him out completely of the upcoming clash against the reigning CAF Champions League winners.

“We are in a hotel with top medics… Saavedra has done a scan, we just received a medical report and we will study it,” he said, as quoted by SportOn host Thabiso Mosia.

“We don’t know if he will make it this weekend, but stranger things have happened in football.”

Mokwena, though, had better news on Rushine De Reuck, while also stating that Lebogang Maboe and Sphelele Mkhulise have also made progress in their recoveries.

“Rushine also didn’t finish the game but he’s fine. We have a couple of bruises but nothing serious. It was a physical game against Al Merrikh, but we got through it,” he added.

“Maboe has gone past 7 months, we thought he would return after 9 months, but he’s back in the first process of training. He still has work to do.

“Mkhukise is back and has joned the team, but is still far from where we want him.”

Sundowns take on Al Ahly at the Cairo International Stadium at 21:00 on Saturday.
