Rulani – A Humbling Wake-Up Call

Mamelodi Sundowns co-coach Rulani Mokwena has insisted Saturday’s 3-0 defeat to Stellenbosch FC was a humbling wake-up call ahead of two very important games.

The newly-crowned DStv Premiership champions lost 3-0 to Stellies at home, thanks to a brace by Ashley Du Preez and another by Jayden Adams.

Mokwena, though, insisted the game may have been a wake-up call at the right time for his treble-chasing side.

“Unfortunately, a humbling result and one that we’ll take,” Mokwena told SuperSport TV.

“We’re very bad losers in this team, but we’ll analyse our mistakes and improve and get better.

“We got this one, it says ‘wakey, wakey, we’re not invincible . We still have two very important games, very important to finish the season well, get the winning feeling and then go into the final and give the trophy to the deserving crowd because they’ve been magnificent, even today.”

Mokwena, though, didn’t want to blame Sundowns’ long list of injuries for their humbling defeat.

“No, because then it sounds like excuses. When we’ve won games, we don’t say this one is out, this one is in,” he added.

“The entire season, we had a huge injury list and we got on with the business.

“We lost today to a team that had only three shots. We had 24 box entries, I think we had 19 shots at goal and there wasn’t a goal. Credit to Steve Barker and his team, not much to say except congratulations to Stellenbosch and we’ll move on.”
