The KwaZulu-Natal government has responded vigorously to claims by Prince Simakade kaZwelithini that he is the Zulu king, calling it an attempt to create confusion before the upcoming Reed Dance.

This comes after a fake poster showed Prince Simakade as the Zulu king and invited people to the Reed Dance from Friday to Sunday at eNyokeni Royal Palace.

More than 40,000 Zulu maidens are expected at the 40th anniversary of the Reed Dance.

Sports, Arts, and Culture MEC Mtomuhle Khawula made it clear that the KZN government only recognises King Misuzulu kaZwelithini as rightful Zulu king.

“The KZN government, led by Premier Thami Ntuli, along with the Zulu Royal House, want to clearly state that the poster showing Prince Simakade as king is fake,” said Khawula.

“There is only one recognised king in KZN, His Majesty King Misuzulu kaZwelithini, according to the Constitution and Zulu traditions,” said Khawula.

He also said the government will not support events that pretend to be Zulu royal gatherings.

Despite the government’s stance, Prince Simakade’s supporters continue to refer to him as the Zulu king, even on social media.
