Royal AM loses its PSL membership after financial difficulties.
Royal AM is owned by Shauwn Mkhize, a South African socialite, TV personality, businesswoman, and entrepreneur.
The Premier Soccer League (PSL) is the top division of professional soccer in South Africa. It is a professional league that features 16 teams competing against each other in a season.
The PSL is governed by the National Soccer League (NSL) and is responsible for organizing and administering the league, including setting rules, scheduling matches, and determining the champion.
The PSL was established in 1996, replacing the National Soccer League (NSL) as the top division of soccer in South Africa.
The PSL features 16 teams that compete against each other in a season. The teams compete in a round-robin format, with each team playing 30 matches in a season. The team with the most points at the end of the season is declared the champion.
The PSL plays an important role in the development of soccer in South Africa, providing a platform for local players to showcase their skills and compete against the best teams in the country.
Royal AM’s PSL membership was terminated due to several reasons including the following:
Misrepresentation of Material Information: The club provided false or misleading information in its application for renewal submitted on July 1, 2024.
Unauthorized Share Transfer: Royal AM transferred shares contrary to the provisions of Article 14.6 of the National Soccer League (NSL) constitution.
Financial Issues: The club fell under South African Revenue Services (SARS) curatorship due to a R40 million debt linked to a family trust fund associated with owner Shauwn Mkhize.
Failed Sale: Attempts to sell the club were unsuccessful after a potential buyer failed to pay the required deposit.
The Premier Soccer League (PSL) executive committee recommended the termination of Royal AM’s membership, which was later ratified by the PSL’s 31 clubs. As a result, Royal AM’s results from the 11 matches played this season will be expunged, and the league will conclude with 15 teams.
