Royal AM president Shauwn ‘Ma’ Mkhize has revealed that goalkeeper Patrick Nyame was in a coma for two days after a clash with Bradley Grobler on Tuesday.
The incident happened in the 94th minute as Grobler netted his side’s third goal in the 3-1 victory but while he pushing a rebound over the line, his shin had hit Nyame’s head after the goalkeeper had made an initial save and was scrambling on the floor to try and prevent Grobler from scoring.
The referee saw nothing wrong with the incident but Nyame suffered bigger consequences than first thought, with MaMkhize stating he suffered a “severe concussion that affected his brain and he was in a coma for two days”.
“The past two days have been very traumatic for the team and I. Our goalkeeper, Patrick Nyame suffered an almost life threatening head injury in our #DStvPremiership fixture against Supersport on Tuesday. I had to stay the whole night at the hospital completely forgotten about the loss all what I wanted was for him to wake up,” she stated on her social channels.
“You know, one wakes up in the morning excited to go support their team and then the worst thing happens. We had to make a life-changing decision in order to save our keepers life.
“While it may have looked like a minor incident on TV, it was a severe concussion that affected his head/brain, he was in the ICU and in a coma for two days.
“What’s difficult is that you still have to be strong for the rest of the team and tell everyone that everything is going to be okay even if you are not sure. Sbahle’s accident really taught me a lot on how to handle a situation like this.
“I am however, disappointed that not a single person from the opposing team has picked up the phone or sent a message to check on his condition. What happened to sportsmanship?!? I guess we are not the same.
“I can now confirm that Patrick is conscious but still in hospital. He has been moved from ICU and will now begin his recovery. We wish him well and thank God that he is safe.”
Royal AM co-coach Abram ‘Wire’ Nteo also confirmed that Nyame is on his way of recovery and expected to leave hospital in a few days.
“Nyame is still recovering. For me I thought it was not that bad, but the looks of things it was bad when he went to the hospital,” he said on Friday.
“But on Thursday we got the message from our management that he is getting better. Probably in two or three days he will be out of the hospital. But he’s getting better.”
Royal AM will face ZESCO United in the CAF Confederations Cup second preliminary round first leg at Nelson Mandela Stadium on Sunday at 16:00.
