The Romanian Government is offering scholarships to citizens from non-EU countries including South Africans at higher education institutions in Romania. These scholarships are for those looking to study both undergraduate and postgraduate degrees at Bachelor’s, Master’s and PhD levels.
The scholarships cover:
- Tuition fees;
- Accommodation;
- Monthly Stipend: Bachelor’s: 65 Euro (R1084); Master’s: 75 Euro (R1251); PhD: 85 Euro (R1418)
- Visa fees
Who should apply?
There are specific eligibility criteria that students must meet to be considered for the scholarship programme. The scholarships are for all programmes of study, except medicine, dental medicine, and pharmacy.
Please Note: Bachelor’s and Master’s programmes will only be provided in the Romanian language as part of the Government’s effort to promote the Romanian language and culture. However, a preparatory language course in Romanian will be available prior to enrolment for those do not speak Romanian.
PhD applicants will be able to opt for a programme in English or a foreign language depending on the arrangements of by the doctoral school.
The eligibility requirements for the Romanian Government Scholarships are:
- You must be a non-European Union citizen
- There must be evidence of a strong academic record
- The applicant must be in good health
How do I apply?

Scholarship applications will only be accepted through the Study in Romania platform.
Candidates can access the platform at https://studyinromania.gov.ro, via the Apply for MFA scholarships button, or directly at https://scholarships.studyinromania.gov.ro. The platform can be accessed in English.
Applications must contain the following documents:
– Official copies of qualifications (Bachelor’s, Master’s and Doctoral degrees, if any);
– Official copies of transcripts;
– Copy of the birth certificate (or equivalent document);
– Copy of the first three pages of the passport or of the national document of identity;
– Curriculum Vitae.
The documents must be scanned individually in PDF format.
The results of the scholarship selection process will be announced by e-mail, on July 15, 2022 to every candidate who applied for a scholarship.
