Orlando Pirates head coach Jose Riveiro has not given up on his side’s chances of qualifying for the CAF Champions League, despite the club’s poor run of late.
Pirates’ 2-1 defeat to Cape Town City over the weekend was their fourth loss in the last seven league games – a run that saw the Buccaneers pick up just one win and drop into eighth place on the log.
Pirates remained on 19 points, eight behind second-placed SuperSport United, who also lost this weekend, but Riveiro is not throwing in the towel for the CAFCL spots.
“Still 15 games to play. So that’s a lot of points to play,” he said.
“The second part of the season is much more difficult, not only for Pirates [but] for everyone in order to collect points,” he said.
“There’s no reason to think that we cannot win 15 games. I’m optimistic, I’m not stupid. I know how difficult is the challenge. But we go into every game with the intention to win.
“And let’s see in the end of the season where we all are and and we finish the season satisfied with our position on the table, with amount of points and with the football that we are trying to play.
“Obviously, we are not in the situation in terms of points that we would like to be, it goes without saying. None of us players, coaches, fans, I’m sure.
“But we have a clearer vision of the team that we want to be in the future. Sometimes it takes a bit more time.
“But we are we are 100% sure about what we are doing. And we have no doubt that we will get there sooner than later.”
Pirates return to action on Saturday when they will host Golden Arrows, who are level on points with, at Orlando Stadium.
