Orlando Pirates head coach Jose Riveiro hasn’t given up on the league title despite being 17 points behind run-away leaders Mamelodi Sundowns with three games in hand.
Pirates didn’t start the season as they would’ve hoped after suffering a 1-0 defeat in their opening league match to Stellenbosch FC at Danie Craven.
The Soweto giants who have won just two of their five league matches have suffered their second league defeat at the hands of Mamelodi Sundowns, while also drawing away from home at Chippa United.
But the Spanish mentor believes that winning their catch-up games and starting a similar run to the one they had in the second half of last season would keep their chances of reclaiming the league title for the first time since 2011/12 season alive.
“We want it too but we’ve only played five games,” he said.
“I don’t think that five games is a number that will give you or give us the possibility to analyse our record in the league.
“We still need to play much more games. Hopefully like I said this time to collect points.
“Two defeats in five games is not what we were dreaming about the beginning of the league. It’s an obvious thing. We don’t need to hide it.
“But now we go again, we have an opportunity to think about ourselves – not thinking who is leading the log or who has more points than us.
“We have to go for pushing our games, collect the points – three out of three to get in every game – and see what’s happening in two, three months and what we have.”
