Jose Riveiro collected trophies for fun in his tenure at Orlando Pirates. Buccaneers around South Africa won’t forget it in a hurry.

The Spaniard is back in the country, and Pirates fans can only reminisce about his special three-year stint with the Sea Robbers.

What is Mr Riveiro doing in Mzansi?

Orlando Pirates fans have only love and respect for Riveiro

Pirates fans love Jose Riveiro for his cup specialist antics in three glittering years at the club, where he scooped five pieces of major silverware. However, fans believe his influence stretched further than the first team.

“This is Riveiro’s legacy, quality youngsters at Pirates.”

This was the opinion of a fan on The South African, while enjoying a piece on Pirates Diski Challenge prospect Mpho Padime. In recent seasons, Pirates have been increasingly keen to blood youngsters. Mohau Nkota rose quickly to prominence before being sold to Al-Ettifaq in Saudi Arabia, while Rele Mofokeng is regarded as the jewel in the club’s crown.

Pirates legend Jose Riveiro is back on SA shores

Jose Riveiro won five trophies with Pirates in just three seasons, winning 82 of 131 matches at the helm. He’s back on South African shores after a special invite by Carling Black Label for the Carling Knockout Cup final.

“I’ve been part of the Black Label journey for three years already, two special ones in the last two years,” he told SuperSport TV host Thomas Mlambo.

“And now I have the opportunity to be part of the brand for a couple of weeks to make sure that we have an exciting tournament in the end.

“That’s why.”

Orlando Pirates fixtures on the horizon

The Sea Robbers are second in the league, three points adrift of leaders Sundowns. However, Abdeslam Ouaddou’s men have two games in hand. Their next test is a home match with Chippa on Saturday, 22 November at 15:30. Youngster Rele Mofokeng has 42 direct goal contributions after 103 outings for the Sea Robbers. Then it’s a trip to Durban City on Saturday, 29 November at 15:30. Their final Betway Prem outing of the calendar year is a home clash with Richards Bay on Tuesday, 2 December at 19:30. Sipho Mbule is the talk of the town after a pair of assists for Bafana in a friendly against Zambia. However, time will tell if the 27-year-old can deliver the goods in the final third in meaningful matches over the course of a season.
