Riveiro Excited About Pirates Progress

Orlando Pirates head coach Jose Riveiro admits he’s been impressed by how quickly his squad has adapted to his playing style.

Pirates are currently second in the DStv Premiership and in the semi-final of the MTN8 and ahead of facing Sekhukune United, there’s a real sense of optimism brewing around the club.

It’s been no secret Pirates have boasted some of the most talented squads in South African football and new head coach Riveiro is seemingly putting the last pieces of the puzzle together.

He’s spoken week in, week out, about the collective and the process of building a template to work from in order for his crop of players to thrive in a specific system.

And when asked how far he feels the players are from where he wants them to be in order to chase silverware this season, the Spaniard suggested there’s already hints that they are.

“They are not far, they are my players, I can continue with what I said previously, it doesn’t matter what I say, propose, approach or try to show to the players if they don’t have the capacity to execute it,” he said.

“The praise is for them, they have the capacity to understand, to execute, to modify during the game when communication is not possible in games like today, the guys are in the game and they are living the games and the weeks.

“You can’t perform like this if you are not doing the things [training and instructions] well during the week and that’s all we’re trying to do.

“So they are already there, they showed they have the capacity to compete well against a team who’s been dominating South African football for the last four of five years. The size of our opponent was not a minor thing, so I’m so proud of them.”

The Buccaneers face off against the struggling Babina Noko this afternoon at the Peter Mokaba Stadium (17h30).
