  • JMPD has arrested 225 motorists for drunk driving in just one week, raising serious concerns about road safety in Johannesburg.
  • Police say the figures highlight motorists’ continued disregard for the law and the lives of others.
  • Authorities are urging road users to plan ahead and avoid driving under the influence as fatal crashes remain largely linked to human error.

The Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) has raised concerns over the increasing number of drunk drivers on Joburg roads.

This follows the arrest of 225 individuals for driving under the influence of alcohol between Monday, 19 January and Sunday, 25 January 2026.

JMPD says these arrests highlight the ongoing challenge of motorists who continue to disregard the law and the safety of other road users.

“Driving under the influence is a serious criminal offence that significantly increases the risk of fatal crashes. Each arrest made represents a proactive step in preventing potential tragedies and protecting the lives of law-abiding residents and visitors,” said JMPD spokesperson Xolani Fihla.

JMPD Chief of Police, Commissioner Patrick Jaca, has also expressed concern over the high number of arrests, saying it is deeply troubling that 225 motorists made the conscious decision to get behind the wheel while intoxicated in just one week.

The JMPD has urged all road users to exercise responsibility.

“If you plan to consume alcohol, please arrange alternative transport, utilise e-hailing services, or designate a sober driver,” Fihla added.

Earlier this year, Transport Minister Barbara Creecy announced that most fatal road accidents in South Africa are due to human error, including speeding and driving under the influence of alcohol.

More than a thousand people were killed on South Africa’s roads during the 2025/26 festive season.
